I also tried acrylic end caps because I had black acrylic, but they were brittle. So, I’ve got a 5 foot rod of Delrin which I’m going to turn (instead of print or cast like the others) and get something closer to the prop It’s not the best video but the board is almost there. It’s playing the sonic noise at the wrong frequency but at least it is loud. Fingers crossed everyone The second step is making a physical model from your digital model. There’s a couple ways to do this. The easiest is to just 3D print your model somehow. In the photo, we’ve chosen to use a resin printing method via a Formlabs printer. However, depending on the model, it is also possible to FDM print. An important thing to remember when printing is to add your tolerances and to remove features that wouldn’t print well. For example, threads. Threads rarely print well in screwdrivers due to their small size. An alternative to 3D printing is to turn and mill all your parts manually. This is slightly better because it lets you see a metal version of your model, but has the downside of being very time consuming. Although, if you plan to market your screwdriver, having a metal prototype is handy. The first step of the process is always modeling. Personally, we use Fusion 360 for all our modeling because it’s quite simple to understand. However, for any beginner, if you can get access to it, Solidworks is a far better option. You always want to model with as many reference images as possible, a lot of which you will eventually be able to find on our website, Thumris.com, on the DIY section. A lot of people have expressed interest in the build process so we’re going to take you through the different steps in building a sonic screwdriver from scratch Just test fitting some of the old prototype parts.
